Estimated Post Soak Measurements For The 32oz Indigo Selvedge Denim

Naked & Famous Denim first introduced the Super Heavyweight 32oz Selvedge Denim in 2014. We did a restock in 2016 and finally, three years later we'll be restocking sizes 28 to 38 any day now. What takes us so long to restock? It is unimaginably hard to produce these jeans. First, we have to convince the factory in Japan to make them. The yarn is 1" x 0.5" thick. The fabric is so difficult to sew that it takes the skill of 3 machine operators to complete each step, and they can only produce 2 pairs in a single day. When the jeans finally arrive at our factory, we apply each super thick 12-15oz cowhide leather patches by hand.

We are hopefully restocking this Monday April 15th. "View The Product" and then use the "Email When Available" button and you'll receive a notification as soon as your jeans are in stock.

The 32oz Indigo Selvedge are Unsanforized. The care label suggests these jeans will shrink approximately 6-8% after first soak. It is impossible to say exactly how much your jeans will shrink because it depends entirely on how you wash and dry your denim. To give you an example of how much they can shrink, I brought a pair home this week, measured them before and after washing, calculated the shrinkage percentage and logged the estimated post soak measurements for each tag size based on my results. See estimated pre and post soak measurement charts below.

Me, struggling to turn the 32oz jeans right-side-out. Fun fact: the banner on the wall behind me is the Naked & Famous Denim logo screen printed on to the 32oz Indigo Denim. This was a gift to our Founder, Brandon, from the maker in Japan.

I washed the jeans inside-side-out, at high temperature, in a regular spin cycle (50 minutes), in a front-load washing machine, without any soap, and laid flat to dry on a drying rack in a sunny spot in my apartment. Here is the shrinkage percentage based on my washing and drying conditions.

Waist: 6.15%
Rise: 2.25%
Thigh: 6.25%
Knee: 3.10%
Leg Opening: 3.45%
Inseam: 4.62%

Everyone's results will be different depending on how they washed and dried their jeans. The post soak measurement chart below is calculated with my shrinkage % as a result from my washing and drying conditions.

@Kyoungkwon Lee – man get a grip. They don’t need your BS. Your attitude is disgusting. I saw no shortage of piss poor customer service in Korea… the release date that isn’t even controlled by these guys was slightly off – this isn’t even subpar customer service. They passed on the information they received. There are so many bigger issues in the world besides getting expensive, uncomfortable jeans on an exact date, you entitled fck.

Andrew Oster

@Alex thank you for reporting on your soaking experience, appreciated. You POST-soak measurements are miles bigger than the charted PRE-soak measurements here on this page; I’m tempted to believe yours are accurate, while the “official” measurements posted by N&F are at best misleading. Before anyone says the chart shows estimated values only I might point out that I’m talking about their pre-soak measurements, which I believe are measurements, not estimations (as estimating pre-soak measurements would be overly daft).

You were a brave soul purchasing a pair of size 38 jeans when the manufacturer says they come with 12.5" thighs pre-soak. :3 If these are as false as they seem to be, they are an effective deterrent for prospective customers.

Alex

Size 38. Did 1st cold soak last night, consisting of running them in the gentle cycle on the front loading commercial washing machine in our building without any detergent. Took about 40-42 minutes to complete the cycle. This is after wearing them around the house a couple hours i.e not a huge amount of wear beforehand.
Here are my post soak measurements:

Waist: 38.5"
Rise: 12"
Thigh: 13"
Knee: 10"
Leg Opening: 8.5"
Inseam: 31"

Definitely more shrink than I expected, especially in the inseam and thigh. I still may do 1-2 more soaks down the line, maybe try some warm water next time.

Andrew Oster

What’s up with the thigh measurements? 11” post-soak in tag 33? I don’t think this should be called the Weird guy fit as that’s misleading for folks who’d normally be able to fit into WG, in fact I have hard time imagining a body type that could make these measurements work. Did this happen by mistake? I don’t think the previous run of 32ozers was this bad.

Dennis Morales

How about making a “straight fit”, (8+inches leg opening) for us traditionalist (older folk).

Jesse

Lol. It’s obviously Kim Jong-un trying to be discreet.

Lol at Lee comment

Kyoungkwon Lee, get a life bro, they don’t need to apologize. Most ridiculous comment I’ve seen here. This company is about as good as it gets for the denim world.

Alex

Wow talk about impatience… I for one, understand that nothing is perfect and sometimes things don’t go according to plan, especially with something like this that is so unusual and difficult to make.
Anyway, thanks for making these available again and for publishing these post soak measurements so I have a rough idea of where they will end up. I think I’ll personally start with a short cold soak and see where they end up, then do additional soaks from there if needed.

Kyoungkwon Lee
